One of the main aims of eSchwechat is the establishment of a Schwechat Information Society (integration of ICT where ever useful): citizens, economy, administration etc.
This project will support the eScwechat initiative and involve the gathering of stakeholder requirements and cataloguing of potential municipal applications for deployment on Schwechat’s and other similar municipal wireless networks in the Centrope region. The project will be modelled after the growing trend towards county-wide wireless deployments observed in the U.S. The chief benefit of using such a regional model for wireless initiatives is the cost-savings achieved through the pooling of resources by cities to draft and evaluate RFIs and RFPs. A main result of the project will be the development of a clearinghouse of information, curricula and e-Learning content related to wireless citizen service applications and network technologies developed and evaluated from the perspective of city planners.
Currently, citywide wireless efforts (esp. in the U.S.) are focused more on improving Internet access and less on the applications that drive ROI. Few objective, comprehensive sources of information exist on existing and potential wireless applications especially from the standpoint of urban and regional planning. The need for such an information service has been reinforced at recent Wireless Cities events in the U.S. and Europe (Muniwireless Minneapolis06, Minneapolis, USA – October 2006, Wireless Cities, Cannes, FR – November 2006). The clearinghouse will be launched as part of a network established in various regions across Europe. The project will foster international and interdisciplinary research & development and evaluation of IT applications aimed at improving citizen services, and reducing public administration and utility costs. |
